The name of the settlement was originally Kumayri, later, until 1840, Gyumri[2]. During the period of Russian Empire rule, from 1840 to 1924, it was renamed Alexandrapol. During the period of the Soviet Union, from 1924 to 1990, the city was renamed Leninakan. In 1990-1992[3] it again received its old name, Kumayri, and then was renamed Gyumri.
